December 2007

Dear Friends:

The celebration of Christmas this year would be incomplete without our expression of gratitude to God for Pope Benedict XVI's Letter to the Roman Catholic Church in China issued earlier in 2007. With his Letter, Pope Benedict has provided the Roman Catholic Church in China an opportunity for re-birth, unity and reconciliation. As we celebrate the beautiful Christmas season, and as we at the Cardinal Kung Foundation celebrate our fifteenth anniversary, let us ask the Lord for the gift of a renewed spiritual life so that Mary may give birth to her Son in each of us.

I apologize that this Christmas greeting comes to you very late and that it is brief. Recently I underwent a major surgery for totally replacing my right knee. I supposedly was going to stay in a hospital for 3 to 4 days, and then be transferred to a rehab facility to do intensive physical therapy. However, I ended up staying in a hospital for 13 days with various complications, including an infection and the loss of half of my blood. I returned home a couple of weeks ago and am doing physical therapy at home in order to regain mobility and general health. I still have intense pain and am on pain medication. I hope that you can understand that some work for the Foundation is inevitably somewhat falling behind. I thank you for your patience.

I am very grateful for all the prayers that have been offered for my complete recovery. Thank you. In comparison to the serious illnesses suffered by the faithful of the underground Roman Catholic Church in China who lacked the financial ability to pay for the needed medical services, my pain and discomfort associated with this knee replacement is small indeed. May God and the Child Jesus accept my offerings of all my pain and discomfort associated with this surgery for: 1) the Roman Catholic Church in China that is in full communion with Pope Benedict XVI and with the Universal Church; 2) the intentions of Pope Benedict XVI; and 3) for the benefactors of the Foundation, living and deceased.

Please include this Foundation on your gift list, financial or spiritual, that this Christmas may truly be a peaceful, joyous, and blessed season in the underground Roman Catholic Church in China. The underground Church will be most grateful to be counted among your friends.

Because this year is the 15th anniversary of the Cardinal Kung Foundation, in my next Newsletter I plan to give you a report of some of the works that the Foundation has accomplished for the underground Church in China during these years.

I wish you and your family all the blessings from the Holy Family.

Yours Sincerely in Christ,
Joseph Kung
President
