Rearrest of a Roman Catholic
Bishop by the Chinese Government.
Seven persons released after the detentions following the Church
destruction incident on November 22.
a) Referencing our press release of
November 3, 1995, Bishop Zeng Jingmu, Roman Catholic
Bishop of Yu Jiang, Jiangxi, arrested on October 4, 1995 by the
Chinese Government, was released from jail on October 18. At that time, the prelate was suffering from a serious case of
pneumonia contracted during his detention without proper medical
care.
This same Bishop Zeng Jingmu was once again arrested by the
Chinese Government on or about November 22, 1995.
This kind of on-and-off arrest without going through the
proper legal process, commonly known as "administrative
detention", has become notoriously prevalent in China as a
weapon of intimidation against the religious leaders.
b) Referencing our press release of November
24, 1995, the 7 people detained as the result of the
destruction of a Roman Catholic Church in Bei Deng Cun by the
Chinese government were released on November 26. This morning a
Holy Mass was offered at the site of the destruction. Thousands
came.
