The following is a list of persons known to the Cardinal Kung Foundation to be Roman Catholics who are confined for their religious belief and religious activity. This list is by no means complete, because of the difficulties in obtaining details. Accordingly, many cases of arrest were not reported here.

(Underground) Roman Catholic Bishops
In Prison, Under House Arrest, Under Strict Surveillance or in Hiding

  

Died in Prison

  1. Bishop GAO Kexian 高可賢, Yantai  煙台, Shandong 山東 
    Arrested in October, 1999.  Died in jail January 24, 2005. (See news report.)  Cause of death unknown.

  2. Bishop HAN Dingxiang 韓鼎祥, Yong Nian 永年, Hebei 河北  
    Arrested on or about December 1, 1999.  (See our press release January 23, 2000)  Died in jail September 9, 2007 at the age of 71.  (See press release.)  Cause of death unknown.

In Prison

  1. Bishop SHI Enxiang 師恩祥, Yixian 易縣, Hebei 河北  
    Arrested April 13, 2001.  (See our press release April 22, 2001)  His whereabouts are unknown.

  2. Bishop SU Zhimin 蘇志民, Baoding 保定, Hebei 河北
    Re-arrested October 8, 1997 after 17 months in hiding. (See our press release October 11, 1997) He has disappeared. His whereabouts are unknown.

In Hiding

  1. Bishop HAN Qian 韓潛, Siping 四平, Jilin 吉林. 
    Has been under arrest warrant for many years. Hiding somewhere.

  2. Bishop YAO Liang 姚良, Xiwanzi 西灣子, Hebei 河北
    Arrested March 31, 2005. (See our press release April 3, 2005) He is in his early 80’s.  Before his arrest, he had been under mounting pressure from the Chinese authority to sever ties with the Pope and join the official Catholic Church (the Patriotic Association).  However, the bishop refused to do so.

     

Under House Arrest or Under Strict Surveillance

  1. Bishop FAN Zhongliang, S.J. 范忠良, Shanghai 上海
    Under strict surveillance.

  2. Bishop HAO Jinli 郝進禮, Xiwanzi 西灣子, Hebei河北 
    Under strict surveillance.

  3. Bishop JIA Zhiguo 賈治國, Bishop of Zhengding 正定, Hebei 河北 
    Arrested many times.  Now under house arrest.

  4. Bishop LI Side 李思德, Tianjin 天津, Hebei 河北 
    Confined to the top of a mountain under primitive conditions. 

  5. Bishop LIU Guandong 劉冠東, Yixian 易縣, Hebei 河北 
    Paralyzed.  Under strict surveillance.

  6. Bishop MA Zhongmu 馬仲牧, Ningxia 寧夏 
    Under strict surveillance.

  7. Bishop John YANG Shudao 楊樹道, Fuzhou 福州, Fujian 福建 
    Arrested February 10, 2000. (See our press release February 13, 2000). Now released under house arrest.

  8. Bishop ZENG Jingmu 曾景牧, Yu Jiang 余江, Jiangxi 江西 
    Arrested November 22, 1995. Sentenced to 3 years. (See our press release November 26, 1995)  He was released from jail May 9, 1998.

Note: Notwithstanding the above list, almost all underground bishops are either in jail, under house arrest, hiding with or without arrest warrants, in labor-camps, or under severe surveillance.

In Prison

  1. Father GUO Ergrang 郭二光, Baoding 保定, Hebei 河北 
    Arrested 2001. Detained in Xushui county 徐水縣 detention center.  Has been locked up for several months in a small cage approximately 10 hours daily.

  2. Father HUO Junlong 霍俊龍, Baoding 保定, Hebei 河北 
    Arrested August 6, 2004.  (See our press release August 16, 2004)

  3. Father LIU Deli 劉德利, Yixian 易縣, Hebei 河北 
    Arrested 1998.  Detained in Yixian detention center.

  4. Father LU Genjun 鹿根君, Baoding 保定, Hebei 河北
    Arrested February 17, 2006. (See our press release February 23, 2006)

  5. Father MA Shunbao 馬順寶, Baoding 保定, Hebei 河北 
    Arrested March 31, 2002. Detained in Qing Yuan County 清苑縣 detention center.

  6. Father MA Wuyong 馬武勇, Baoding 保定, Hebei 河北 
    Arrested August 6, 2004. Detained in Qing Yuan County 清苑縣 detention center.  (See our press release August 16, 2004)

  7. Father PANG Guangzhao 龐光照, Baoding 保定, Hebei 河北
    Arrested July 1, 2003. Although released and gone home, he is not allowed to administer sacraments.

  8. Father WANG Zhenhe 王振和, Baoding 保定, Hebei 河北 
    Arrested March 1999. Has been detained for 5 years. Although released and gone home, he is not allowed to administer sacraments.

  9. Father YAN Jianwei  楊建偉, Baoding 保定, Hebei 河北 
    Arrested November 12, 2005.  (See our press release November 17, 2005)

  10. Father YEN Shuangxi 尹雙喜, Baoding 保定, Hebei 河北 
    Arrested July 2003.  Detained in Xushui county 徐水縣 detention center.  Has been locked up for several months in a small cage approximately 10 hours daily.

  11. Father ZHANG Chunguang 張春光, Baoding 保定, Hebei 河北
     Arrested April 2000. Has been detained for 4 years. Although released and gone home, he is not allowed to administer sacraments.

  12. Father ZHANG Zhenquian 張振全, Baoding 保定, Hebei 河北 
    Arrested August 2004.  Detained in Xushui county 徐水縣 detention center.  Has been locked up for several months in a cage for approximately 10 hours daily.  See our press release August 16, 2004)
